Experts say that Community Health Workers are essential to improving the health of communities. A Community Health Worker is a health promoter, a health networker and a carer to communities struggling to manage their health and wellbeing.

When Community Health Workers do their job well, ripples can be felt throughout the community: a young mother is encouraged to take her underweight baby to the clinic, a TB patient receives his medication, and a pensioner has her blood pressure taken on time each week.

Learn how to manage the effects of tiredness at work, to understand the principles of primary health care and how these apply to projects within communities (including tuberculosis and HIV / AIDS information sharing), gain insights into healthy nutrition and gain the knowledge necessary to be able to refer community members to health care services.

1 Year National Certificate in Community Health

Robin Trust offers a 1 year National Certificate (NQF Level 2) course for students who wish to be involved in healthcare services.

We are accredited by the HW SETA to offer the qualification (SAQA qualification ID: 64749).

Learning delivery

The qualification comprises both classroom based instruction and periods of practical training in various healthcare facilities. Students complete assignments, formative and summative assessments and tests and are required to demonstrate practical proficiency in order to complete the qualification.

What you can expect

Based at our College in Pinelands, students will be supported by qualified nurse educators, guest speakers and support staff throughout the curriculum. Periods of classroom based instruction will ensure that students are equipped with the knowledge and insight necessary.

Students will complete periods of practical training at various healthcare facilities, intended to provide the students with a real time opportunity to practice and refine their skills, gain confidence and support their fellow students.

The course comprises 12 months of study.

Mid year and final examinations will be administered by the HW SETA and will take place at the College. Students who successfully complete the qualification will be accredited and certified by the HW SETA.

Selection Process

There are two intakes per year – in March and October annually.

Prospective students must have passed Grade 11 and will be subject to selection assessment as part of the application process.

Selection interviews take place at the College each Wednesday from 08h00. Should you wish to apply, you must bring the following documentation with you to the interview:

Two certified copies of your legal identity document (note: foreign students must submit certified copies of their relevant permit, valid for the period of study)
One certified copy of your school leaving certificate (note: foreign students must submit a certified copy of their SAQA qualification assessment outcome).

An administration fee of R100-00 is payable. Please also bring a black pen.

Who can complete this qualification?

Any individual who wants to be involved in healthcare services or who wish to progress their formal education and training. The qualification will also assist those who have worked in the field for many years with no formal recognition of their knowledge and skills to gain a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) processes and customised periods of study.

What job opportunities are there for a Community Health Worker?

The Department of Health is placing renewed focus on Community Health Workers, opening new posts on a regular basis. NGO’s, government departments and the private healthcare sector are also adding Community Health Workers to their structures.

It is intended that a multi-professional team based approach to healthcare delivery is implemented within the sector, with each team member having a defined role.

What will I do as a Community Health Worker?

A Community Health Worker helps to bridge the gap between the community and formal health structures like clinics and government hospitals. Community Health Workers help people in the communities to take their medication, check their blood pressure and re-educate patients and their families about healthy living patterns that will ensure patients stay well.

Train as a Nurse
